Vic: Melbourne "spidernauts" die in Columbia tragedy
Eight Melbourne Zoo-bred spiders were on board the United States space shuttle Columbiawhich disintegrated in a fireball, killing all seven crew.
The Garden Orbweavers, a common Australian garden spider, were on board Columbia totest the effects of zero gravity on webs.
News of the doomed mission devastated those involved in the spiders-in-space experiment-- a joint project between NASA, RMIT University and 11 students from Glen Waverley SecondaryCollege, in Melbourne's south-east.
Glen Waverley teacher BRONWYN PRATT says the students have gone into shock.
She says spiders and experiments can be replaced but people's lives can't and that'sthe sad part.
NASA-trained teacher KEVIN MANNING, who helped co-ordinate the project, says the studentswere looking forward to getting the spiders back but says all they would really want isto have the seven astronauts back.
