Qld:Climate change affecting Australian fauna, says expert

A conference has been told global warming is already having an effect on Australianplants and animals.

Ecologist and senior lecturer at Sydney's Macquarie University, LESLEY HUGHES, saysthere's increasing evidence that climate change is pushing some species away from theirtraditional habitats.

Dr HUGHES, speaking at the Ecology 2002 conference in Cairns, says the tree line inthe Victorian Alps is changing as snow gums grow at higher altitudes because of warmingtemperatures.

He says where growth has been limited by cold before, it's now getting warmer, so saplingsare growing further up.

Dr HUGHES says that's almost certainly a direct result of temperatures increasing.

Kangaroos, wallabies and feral animals are also being found further up the mountains, compared with in the 1970s, and migratory birds normally arriving in spring are arrivingweeks earlier.
